Prague, Czech Republic
Although on the blog we were supposed to talk about Warsaw's restaurants, we thought it's worthwhile to create a forum in which we will describe our culinary travels. By going to a new city we don't know any places where we can eat or where not, to avoid disappointment. That's why we want to show you places we visited (of course, with descriptions of delicious food and many pictures) and recommend or dissuade in order to fill your travels with exquisite taste.
I've been in Prague recently with my boyfriend for a few days for a romantic getaway. We wanted to spend some time together, see the main sights and, of course, try the local cuisine. The Czech capital is surprising us at every step with its beauty - colorful houses, narrow streets and many historical sites that are worth to see. Most of the restaurants we've chosen earlier - they were recommended on tourist websites and Czech blogs. Several places were completely random, we encountered them during long walks. They captivated us and we couldn't resist not to try anything. We tried to choose a typical Czech dishes, to taste the local cuisine. In Prague you have to try smažený sýr, Czech dumplings and meat served with lots of sauce. Do not forget about Czech beer with lunch or dinner! Beer stánku, which is very common in Czech, is delivered to the pub a few hours after manufacture, straight from the brewery. It tastes a little different, in my opinion better than with a pourer. You will find them in almost every pub, look for big signs on the boards in front of the entrance.
Prague is of course not only delicious food, but plenty of things to see. The city was not destroyed during the war, so while each walk we could enjoy the view of multi-colored, well-kept houses. At the beginning we went to Prague must-see - Hradczany.
The complex is situated on a hill, from where we could admire magnificent panorama of the city. You buy one ticket for several attractions, it makes sightseeing easier. Must-see there is the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral with amazing stained glass windows, built for over 600 years at the behest of Charles IV. We went also to the South Tower of the Cathedral measuring 96.67m. We beat 287 stairs and saw the Zygmunt bell weighing 18 tons, cast in 1549. Tiring climbing paid off - amazing views of the whole city and cathedral roof covered with a grid of small, leaden rhombuses were waiting for us at the top.
Notable is also the Golden Lane with small, colorful houses. Today, full of tourists, was once inhabited by the castle guards, artisans and officials.
Nearby is the Loreta, baroque sacred building, with a beautiful Holy House in the middle of the yard. Inside we found a lot of images and exhibits, religious, with very interesting and clear descriptions. For a little rest we chose one of the parks - Vojanovy sady. The park is inhabited by peacocks, very friendly towards people. Also nearby is the narrowest street in the world, you can go there. The motion is governed by traffic lights for pedestrians. We unfortunately didn't have time to go there. We really regret it because we were so close.
Another place we visited was the Old Town, we went there for a night walk. In every corner you can take beautiful photos that will be a perfect souvenir. We went through the Old Town Square with its many restaurants, but people discouraged us to eat in typical tourist's places.
Then we got lost in the narrow streets with small shops and suddenly came across Charles Bridge, ideal for a romantic walk. The bridge is over 500m in length and it's decorted in large, stone statues of saints. Unfortunately, the atmosphere is not so fairy tale, as you can read in the guidebooks - the bridge is very popular among tourists, so anytime terribly crowded.
I recommend Prague to all, for a getaway with friends, a romantic weekend with your partner or to wander the beautiful streets! In next post I'll describe some restaurants we visited in Prague, with the hope that they could be useful to you once you'd need a gastronomic guide through Czech cuisine.
